Sonoran and Mojave
Desert Photos

PAGE 4

The Sonoran Desert is found in southern and western Arizona, southern California, and northern Mexico. The Mojave Desert is in southern California and southwestern Nevada. The photos below are from a trip I took in March 1998 to several Parks in California and Arizona. See my Links page for sources of more information about these great places.
To minimize page-loading time, the photos are spread out over four pages.

At "Badwater": the lowest place in the Western Hemisphere (-282 feet). Looking west towards Telescope Peak and the Panamint Range. Beyond the small pool in the foreground the playa was covered with several inches of brine -- spring run-off saturated with salt from the playa surface.

At "Badwater". This is a view looking east from several hundred yards out on the (wet) playa. There's a sign marking "Sea Level" about a third of the way up the slope.

At "Badwater". Cool salt crystal formations -- the surface on which you walk -- under several inches of saturated brine covering the playa. Kinda sharp on bare feet -- I wore Tevas.

At "Badwater". More cool salt pan, with rafts of salt crystals floating on the surface of the brine.

Death Valley National Park, CA
At "Badwater". Looking north from way out in the brine pool -- I was the lowest person in the Western Hemisphere. You can see the outlines of polygons of salt formed when the playa was last dry.
